About the Trainer

Dr. Iris Köhler is a career coach and experienced scientist. She studied agricultural sciences and received her doctorate at the Technical University of Munich in 2013. After a postdoctoral stay at the University of Illinois, she switched to science management and coordinated the graduate school of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig. She’s passionate about supporting young scientists and therefore in 2018, she decided to found her own coaching and training company “The Scientist Coach”. Because of her scientific background, she knows exactly the challenges that young scientists are facing when it comes to career planning. And as a trained career coach and experienced course instructor, she has the right tools to help young scientists tackle those challenges, develop their own career path and discover their competencies!

1:00 pm Lecture

Melanie Bittner

Leaky pipeline, glass ceiling, rush hour of life, work-life-balance, …

There are many concepts and metaphors to explain the lasting under-representation of women as university professors. Beyond numbers, women – especially women of color, first generation academics and women with disabilities – experience numerous challenges when following their career path in academia. The presentation will help you understand the interrelationship between gender and power structures at universities today.

What are the structural causes for the under-representation of women?

How neutral and objective is academia when it comes to hiring and promotions?

What can universities do to sustainably promote gender equality and diversity?

“I work with and for people who want to exercise their power to shape organizations.”

Freelance consultant for gender, diversity and anti-discrimination culture since 2011

“So, you want to have a life AND work in academia? Let’s talk!”

Why do (especially German) academic careers seem to insist on “either-or” tradeoffs among life domains? And what can we do about it? We’ll look at how our inherited academic culture of long hours and exclusive devotion to science developed, how it’s being re-designed, what stands in the way of the processes of change, and what we can do individually and collectively to move our careers in directions that serve our lives instead of our lives existing to serve our careers.

Why you need a network – and how it makes you happy and successful

Having a diversified network is a key factor for success in academia, as various studies show. Due to different barriers to career opportunities, it is even more important to female scientists to actively and continuously engage in networking. However, networking is sometimes considered ambivalent and difficult to manage – especially by women: some feel conflicted about instrumental networking, even while recognizing the importance of being well-connected.
Which (gendered) beliefs, systematic boundaries or structural conditions could hold women back from searching for new ties, maintaining existing ties and increase thereby their social ressources? In this talk, we have an evidence-based and interactive look at this question and analyze where potential points of shifting these beliefs and boundaries are. Furthermore, we discuss strategies and forms of networking to develop our social and professional networks in size, diversity and cohesiveness – for our own – and other women’s – happiness, empowerment and success.

12:45 pm Lunch Break – Networking

2:15 pm Panel discussion in German
